Though they seldom happen, occasionally there are orthodontic emergencies, most of which do not require the immediate orthodontic care. Depending on the situation, a follow up visit may be indicated. When ligatures come off, they may be able to be put back on by using tweezers. If they are lost or broken, let our orthodontist know in the event that you need to be seen right aaway. Mouth sores are a common occurrence and some people may have sudden outbreaks. Though not necessarily caused by the braces, they can be made worse by the irritation the braces cause. Most of the time an over-the-counter topical anesthetic is all that is needed.
If a wire should work its way lose and protrude causing irritation, it can be pushed back so that it is flat on the tooth. If that does not work, it can be covered with relief wax. This is a situation where you will want to see our orthodontist as soon as you can. Loose bands, brackets and wires will of course require the attention of the orthodontist, but not necessarily immediately.
