In some cases, surgery is needed to complete the necessary orthodontic treatment. At Walton Orthodontics, our board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Matt Walton, is experienced in evaluating each individual patient to determine the best course of action and treatment to achieve the best results. Surgical orthodontics is one option that may be used to help create the beautiful, healthy smile that our patients desire.
What is Surgical Orthodontics?
When surgical intervention is needed to correct jaw irregularities or misalignments, it is referred to as surgical orthodontics. Dr. Walton will consider this option when a correct bite or alignment cannot be achieved through braces along. This procedure generally involves surgically correcting jaw placement to ensure the jaw bones align to allow for correct speech and chewing, as well as for aesthetic appearance. This treatment option is usually only for adults that have fully formed jaw bones, after ages 16 for females and 18 for males.
Those who receive surgical orthodontic treatment will undergo surgery at a local hospital to correct their jaw alignment. Dr. Walton will discuss the operation in great detail with the patient to ensure they understand what will be corrected and what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Surgical orthodontic treatment is used in conjunction with braces, usually before and after surgery, to correctly align the teeth.
Surgical orthodontics requires an experienced orthodontist that understands the complexity involved in changing jaw bone alignments. Dr. Walton’s decades of experience and ongoing annual education in the orthodontic field make him an excellent choice for anyone needing surgical orthodontic treatment.
