(Atlanta-Cumming, GA) I am asked this question a lot. For whatever reason, people often find the need to remove their aligners several times a day for various activities. The most common reason is for eating.
That is ok as long as you get in a minimum of 22 hours per day. I worry a little when patients start estimating the amount of time they are wearing (or not wearing, for that matter) their aligners. For example, when the patient tells me they are wearing their aligners “all the time” when further questioning determines that the only time, other than eating, when they are not wearing their aligners is when they are on the phone at work and deeper questioning reveals that they work at a call center and talk on the phone all day long. Do you see my point? Obviously, this is an extreme example. The thing is “all the time” does not necessarily mean what it appears to mean.
The take home message is, whatever activity you do that requires removal of your aligners…the total amount if time out of your mouth on any given day cannot exceed 2 hours.
