Orthodontics is an excellent solution for getting your teeth to move into proper position. However, once your braces come off, your teeth are not guaranteed to stay in place forever. While some minor teeth shifting is normal and expected, you’ll need to wear your retainer and pay attention to certain habits if you want to prevent major teeth movement.
Minor Movement is Normal
When you get your braces off, slight movement is to be expected in the initial period. This even applies if you are wearing your retainer as suggested. Not only will your gums adjust as they are restored to a healthier state, but your teeth will also settle now that the wires and brackets are off. Typically, this minor shifting is only noticeable on the sides and back of your mouth instead of the front.
Other Causes of Shifting Teeth
If you are wearing your retainer just as your orthodontist prescribed and still experiencing some teeth movement after that initial timeframe, you may need to investigate a few other causes.
One culprit may be your age. If you’re still growing, your jaw is still changing or shifting. Or, you may be engaging in a bad habit, such as pressing your tongue against the back of your teeth or grinding/clenching your teeth at night. These situations can cause your teeth to move after braces.
Don’t Ignore Major Tooth Movement
If you notice or feel that your teeth are migrating back to where they were before braces, don’t ignore it. Any major shifting in your teeth needs to be evaluated by your orthodontist. The last thing you want to do is set yourself up for another round of orthodontic treatment if it could have been avoided. You may need an adjustment on your retainer or you may need to start wearing it more often.
At Walton Orthodontics, we do our best to help patients retain their orthodontic results. We understand that braces require a notable investment in terms of cost and time.
