True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but there are times when your orthodontic appliance may be causing pain, is damaged or not functioning properly. At Walton Orthodontics, we always want to hear from you if you are experiencing an unexpected orthodontic concern or suffering from pain. Since many orthodontic problems do not warrant an immediate appointment, here are some at-home remedies recommended by Suwanee, GA orthodontist, Dr. Walton, to address your concerns until we can see you in our office – which will always be as soon as possible.
Soreness
If you just had your braces put on or had your appliance tightened, it is normal to experience general soreness. It should never result in severe pain. Instead, over-the-counter pain relievers can alleviate your discomfort. If you are suffering from tender spots on your gums or cheeks, try rinsing with warm salt water or applying Orabase for relief. In the mean time, stick to a soft diet and the soreness should resolve in 3 to 5 days. Make a call to the office if you are experiencing prolonged soreness or worsening pain.
Poking Wire
A loose wire can cause discomfort. Grab a pair of tweezers and try to put your wire back into place first. If you cannot do this, use a piece of wax to cover the end of the wire for better comfort until you can come in to see us. If these efforts have failed, you may use a small fingernail clipper to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. Poking wires can be pushed down by a pencil eraser or with wax.
Loose Bracket
If your bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, leave it be and put a piece of wax on it to temporarily secure it in place. If your bracket can be removed, save it and bring it with you to your appointment.
Lost Retainer
A lost retainer is not necessarily an emergency situation, but it does require attention sooner rather than later. It may be hard to confess that you’ve misplaced your removable appliance, but the retention phase of your treatment is very important to ensure your smile stays straight. Call our orthodontic office in Suwanee, GA to get a replacement retainer as soon as you can.
Although the above suggestions may be effective remedies for the time being, they are not intended to be permanent solutions. These at-home tips are to relieve your discomfort until you can see your Suwanee orthodontist. Allowing your appliance to remain damaged or loose for an extended period of time will disrupt (and prolong) your treatment plan. In addition, if you are experiencing sudden tooth pain or sensitivity, call your dentist. You may have an area of tooth decay that needs to be addressed. Maintaining a diligent oral hygiene routine during your time in braces can prevent many dental health problems.
