We’ve all heard the horror stories of having to go to the orthodontist to get your braces “tightened” and all the discomfort that comes with that.
Discomfort with braces occurs because of the forces applied to the teeth to make them move. The wires supply the force to move teeth and, in many instances, the force is excessive. Too much force can actually cause damage to the teeth like root resorption and micro-traumas which can actually cause teeth to stop moving.
Traditional orthodontic treatment typically progresses through a series of wire changes (as many as 6-8 wires). With each wire change, a larger and stiffer wire is placed into the braces.
